PALADIN TO RELEASE "THEY REMAIN"

Genre-Bending Thriller By Philip Gelatt To Open In Fall

New York- June 14, 2017- Paladin has acquired domestic theatrical rights to THEY REMAIN, a genre-bending experience in terror written and directed by Philip Gelatt, it was announced by company president Mark Urman. Gelatt, who has amassed impressive credentials as an innovative, versatile creator of sophisticated genre content in a variety of mediums, has re-teamed on the project with Reno Productions, with whom he made his acclaimed debut feature, "The Bleeding House," which premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. The deal was negotiated by Urman and Reno principal, Will Battersby, who served as the film's producer. Paladin and Reno are prepping THEY REMAIN for a film festival launch and theatrical release commencing in the Fall.

Based on the 2010 short story, "-30-" by award-winning author Laird Barron, THEY REMAIN explores the evolving relationship between Keith and Jessica, two scientists who are employed by a vast, impersonal corporation to investigate an unspeakable horror that took place at the remote encampment of a mysterious cult. Working and living in a state-of-the-art, high tech environment that is completely at odds with their surroundings, they spend their days gathering physical evidence, analyzing it, and reporting on their findings.

The intensity of their work, and their extreme isolation, bring the pair closer. But, when Jessica discovers a mysterious artifact of unknown origin, the dynamic between them changes: secrets are kept, sexual tensions arise, and paranoia sets in. Keith begins to have visions and is unable to distinguish whether they are nightmares or hauntings. Having lost all sense of what is real and what is imagined, all he knows is that the horror he and Jessica have been sent to uncover—a horror that could be biological, psychological, or supernatural— now threatens his very survival.

Barron’s novels, short fiction, and poems have earned him a substantial following among aficionados of fantasy, noir, horror, and sci-fi, and have twice won him the Shirley Jackson Award. Gelatt, similarly, combines multi-disciplinary experience as a graphic novelist and comic book creator for the “Indiana Jones” franchise, and for such companies as Dark Horse Comics and Oni Press, with his background as a video game writer for such companies as Crystal Dynamics and Frictional Games, and on “Rise of The Tomb Raider” (for which he won the WGA Award). With this pedigree, it is unsurprising that THEY REMAIN succeeds in splicing these various strains of pop culture DNA into a unique and imaginative cinematic hybrid.

THEY REMAIN stars William Jackson Harper (“Paterson,” “True Story”) and Rebecca Henderson (“Mistress America”) as Keith and Jessica.  The film's third "star" is cinematographer Sean Kirby, whose hallucinatory images contribute immeasurably to its disorienting, disturbing mood.  Kirby's credits include the acclaimed documentaries "Racing Extinction," and "The Tillman Story," as well as Robinson Devor's notorious "Zoo," which created a sensation at both Sundance and Cannes, and which Urman executive produced and released through THINKFilm. Approved by WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER co-writer and director David Wain, WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: FANTASY CAMP is an old school tabletop RPG that allows fans to play as a camper, counselor or staffer, such as Coop, Beth or Gene, and experience one insane day at Camp Firewood. Hump a fridge, end up at a secret pizza party, or save the camp from a renegade piece of Skylab, just like in the original film!

“Who wouldn’t want to play an RPG with drugs, sex, and talking vegetables?” said WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: FANTASY CAMP co-author Lee Keeler. “We are thrilled to be working with David Wain, and are glad that he hopped on board when we pitched him the idea for the game.”

“WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: FANTASY CAMP is both a compelling stand-alone reading experience and just plain fun to play,” said The Devastator co-founder and game author Geoffrey Golden. “The game includes three customizable story-paths: Save the Camp, Superstardom, and Bonfire Boinking. But even if you’re allergic to the idea of playing an RPG, you’ll want to read the rulebook, which was ‘written’ by The Indoor Kids in 1981.”

“You don’t have to be a crowned class B Dungeon Master to play this game,” said Devastator co-founder Amanda Meadows. “If you’re terrible at math, you’ll still enjoy the experience. My partner co-wrote this game and he’s absolutely terrible at math.”

If funded through Kickstarter, WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: FANTASY CAMP will be available to backers in November 2017. Talent from the WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER film are already backing the RPG, with a book forward from David Wain and “game tip” interviews with actors Michael Ian Black, Joe Lo Truglio, and Marguerite Moreau on how to kickass playing as their characters McKinley, Neil, and Katie. As campaign perks, backers can get the book as a digital download, or as a physical copy (some of which are autographed by the game’s creators). The Devastator will even mail you postcards from Camp Firewood or an actual bottle of dick cream. Backers will also have the chance to play the game early with the creators!

 Jones will play Mr. Nancy, the old African trickster god more commonly known as Anansi, and one of Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) oldest confidantes. Like Wednesday, Nancy is ready to bring this new America (and its new gods) to its knees, desperate to light a fire and watch the whole world burn. 

 In 2015, Jones co-founded the immersive content studio Legion of Creatives with former Disney executive Jay Williams and writer/producer Noam Dromi. The company is producing a wide range of multi-platform programs including the original series “High School 51”, created by Star Trek, Transformers, and Amazing Spiderman 2 writer/producer Roberto Orci.

 Later this year he'll be seen in the independent feature film The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea as well as the film Tainted Love, based on the graphic novel-style action comedy, which he also wrote and produced. It's a first of its kind digital feature that is the launching pad for a unique narrative journey across multiple platforms.

Demore Barnes (“12 Monkeys”) has also been added to the cast as Mr. Ibis, the keeper of stories, past and present. 

 In the last two years Barnes has been juggling series regular and recurring roles on “Hemlock Grove” for Netflix, “Open Heart” for YTV and Nickelodeon as well as “12 Monkeys” for Syfy network.  He had a 2 episode arc on “Defiance” for Syfy and a guest starring role on “The Flash” for the CW.

American Gods has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
