Fuelling electronic experimentation with punk energy and confessional lyricism, IAMX’s alternative electronica sound, fashion, performances, videos, and persona are larger than life, iconoclastic, and shockingly intimate. Directed by Corner himself, the video for “Stardust,” which opens AINL was filmed in downtown Los Angeles. “I rented an industrial work loft and spent a month experimenting with lights, mirrors and different camera techniques,” IAMX explains. In it, Kat Von D helps transform one of the band members aristocratic to anarchic against stark and angular lighting and camerawork, but IAMX leaves the meaning up to interpretation. “I never really go in with a solid concept. it’s more like piecing together a puzzle. I dislike narratives but I love visual art and performance art. So that’s what I tried to incorporate in this video. I also wanted to capture a little piece of the IAMX live experience, because it’s such an integral part of the project.” In addition to helming clips for his own work, Chris has also directed videos for other artists, including “I Am Dust” and “My Name is Ruin”for close friend, electronic pioneer Gary Numan.
“Stardust’”s striking fetishitic and expressionist styling ended up dictating the look and lighting concept for IAMX’s current tour. “The costumes and styling were developed spontaneously by everybody in the group. Everybody is very free and creative and it was beautiful to be around my live band members Janine Gezang, Sammi Doll and Jon Siren.” Joining the band in the clip is tattoo superstar, Kat Von D. “She sings beautifully on the recording and I was hoping I could get her to star in the video. She came and fit right in. She knew what to do without me even starting to direct,” Chris says. “We both create, not because we want to, but because we HAVE to.”
ABOUT IAMX
Co-founder of 1990’s trip-hop group Sneaker Pimps, Chris Corner’s process of becoming IAMX has been theatrical, transcendent, and communal. Androgynous and visceral, he has metamorphosed from small-town kid to international pop star to creator of raw art that disrupts gender and genre. Emerging from an intense depression that fueled his last two albums, IAMX (Chris Corner) released his newest LP Alive In New Light (AINL) on February 2, 2018.  A cinematic celebration of breaking free from demons that have long plagued him, AINL is both a ‘thank you’ to fans and an invitation to the next phase in IAMX’s intoxicating journey of self-discovery. In addition to appearing on four tracks and touring on select dates, kindred spirit and superfan, Kat Von D will be collaborating with IAMX on a new makeup line. The AINL celebration also features a line of erotic merchandise inspired by the album cover designed by Ryan Clark, “metal head” for Demon Hunter and designer for Invisible Creature. Among its searing track list, AINL features “Mile Deep Hollow,” the fifteenth IAMX song to be synced on ABC TV’s blockbuster How to Get Away with Murder.
ABOUT “ALIVE IN NEW LIGHT”
Recorded, performed, and mixed by IAMX in the California desert, in a trailer facing a mountain, “far from the Joshua Tree hippies,” AINL features nine songs that put a majestic spin on alternative electronica thanks to Corner’s powerful vocals and larger than life production. “The desert is white noise,” Chris explains. “You can lose yourself in the details of producing, mixing; it’s just silence.”  On Alive in New Light (AINL), IAMX explores the complexities of mutation through sound, visual art, makeup, and intimate merchandise with the unflinching ferocity fans have to come expect and newcomers are certain to be seduced by.
