The 2017 Christmas special entitled “Twice upon a time” was the final episode for Peter Capaldi. The twelfth Doctor in the series had a fitting goodbye. Without giving away spoilers, since River would be ever so cross with us, I have to say it was one of the sweetest episodes I had watched of new Who. The twelfth Doctor was having a bit of an existential crisis and ended up working along side himself, the first Doctor. The verbal jabs of how far the Doctor has come in his thinking (for example, women have a place in the TARDIS other than just cleaning) and actions was amusing, especially when he berates himself. The reveals were well placed and final speech the Doctor gave to his future self felt as though Peter was saying goodbye to his fans and telling us all to keep our hearts in right place now and always. I’ll admit I cried, a lot. Big fat tears rolled down my face as moments were revealed and both the first and twelfth Doctors had their goodbyes on screen. In the final moments we had a chance to see the new incarnation of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker as she made her Who debut and her first words “Oh, brilliant!” Now we have the long wait until fall to see what the new Doctor and the new show runner, Chris Chibnall, will give us all.
